Dry Eye Symptoms

Your specific symptoms will help your doctor determine the cause of your condition and devise an appropriate treatment. Symptoms usually occur in both eyes. The symptoms of dry eye include:

Dryness

Excessive watering

Redness

Blurred vision

Stinging or burning sensation

A sensation of having something in your eye

Gritty or sandy feeling

Difficulty wearing contact lenses

Sensitivity to light

Difficulty driving at night

Even if you don’t have all of these symptoms, you may still have dry eye. In addition to these symptoms, many patients who suffer from the condition report experiencing dry eye when on an airplane, while riding a bike, or if they have rheumatoid arthritis.

It may be time to request a consultation with our Utah doctors if your symptoms are persistent.

What to Expect During Your Consultation

Discuss Symptoms

During your consultation, one of our doctors will ask you to discuss your dry eye symptoms. In addition to screening for dry eye symptoms, understanding how you use your eyes can also help our doctors determine the cause and best course of treatment for you.

If you use a computer extensively or are a truck driver, inform your doctor because this can help our team personalize a treatment plan that meets your needs and helps you perform your work.

Eye Exam and Diagnosis

To accurately diagnose the cause of your dry eyes, our doctors will first perform a slit lamp examination, which closely examines the surface of the eye. This technique uses a microscope, light source, and dye to help us visualize signs of dryness and assess the quality of your tear film.

Advanced diagnositic imaging of the tears and mybomian glands provide insight into the best treatments for you.

Customized Treatment Plan

As you will see below, many types of  dry eye treatment are availalble.  Such a variety of options can be confusing.

Because each individual is unique, and the causes of dryness can vary, your dry eye treatmetn plan will be customized based on your goals, symptoms, and lifestyle.

Dry Eye Treatment Options

Chronic dry eye is an eye condition that can have many causes. Fortunately, it also has many treatment options.   Our Utah doctors in South Jordan can help determine the correct treatment options for your unique case.

Lifestyle Changes

You can try to alleviate the symptoms of dry eyes by changing some habits, like quitting smoking, using a humidifier in dry seasons, and switching out your contacts for glasses. Tobacco smoke can dry out your eyes, humidifiers can introduce moisture into a dry environment, and glasses can prevent air from blowing into your eyes and keep your tears from evaporating quickly.

Lubrication Therapy

For mild cases of dry eye, the most conservative treatment option consists of introducing over-the-counter artificial tears to lubricate the eyes. If artificial tears alone do not alleviate your symptoms, our eye care doctors will find an alternative solution.

Prescription Eye Drops

Our doctors can prescribe anti-inflammatory eye drops that promote tear production rather than simply moistening the eye. RESTASIS® can help increase your tear production by reducing inflammation stemming from chronic dry eye. With consistent use, it can stimulate the eyes’ natural tear production. We also commonly prescribe Xiidra® eye drops to reduce dry eye signs and symptoms in as little as two weeks.

Punctal Plugs

If your dry eye symptoms persist after lubrication therapy and prescription eye drops, we may recommend punctal plugs. During this safe and effective outpatient procedure, one of our doctors will place small, biocompatible plugs into the tear ducts of your upper and lower eyelids to help your tears moisten your eyes more effectively and to conserve any artificial tears you may be using.

Amniotic Membranes

For patients with severe cases of dry eye, we may place an amniotic membrane on the cornea using PROKERA® or BioDOptix® technology. These devices look similar to a large contact lens and can simultaneously reduce inflammation and heal the cornea.

Treat Other Eye Conditions

If your dry eye is linked to another condition like blepharitis, our doctors can use an in-office treatment like BlephEx® to gently clear away the biofilm along the lashes on the eyelids. By clearing away debris along the eyelids, your meibomian glands, the oil glands along the edge of your eyelids, can better produce the oil that keeps your tears from evaporating too quickly.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Eighty percent of dry eye sufferers have meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).  Our doctors may prescribe intense pulsed light to treat evaporative dry eye caused by MGD.  IPL therapy uses light that is converted into heat to warm up the meibomian glands in the eyelids to improve their functionality. IPL also treats fine wrinkles and age spots around the eyes.

Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) or Red Light Therapy

LLLT uses red or near-infrared light to penetrate the skin of the eyelid to reduce inflammation, improve meibomian gland dyfunction (MGD), enhance cellular repair, and promote healing.

LLLT is an important piece of our Accelerated Tear Restoration Protocol, our most effective protocol for the treatment of Dry Eye.

Will Insurance Cover Dry Eye Treatment?

YOUR MEDICAL INSURANCE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO EYE CARE

Many people who suffer from dry eye believe their insurance prohibits them from visiting an eye doctor more than once per year.  Fortunately, your medical insurance can contribute to office visits and some treatments for medical conditions such as dry eye disease when you visit our South Jordan, UT, practice.

Lubricating Drops are Often Just Not Enough!

Many patients express the frustration of having to use eye drops multiple times a day, because the relief doesn’t last.

For lasting comfort and relief, our South Jordan, Utah Optometrists prefer to treat the problem at its source.

The Real Problem is MGD

Tear Restoration Therapy is the Solution

The Time to Act is Now

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is a common eye condition where the tiny meibomian  glands in your eyelids don’t work properly.  These glands produce oils that stabilize your tears. When the glands don’t work well or get blocked, your tears dry up faster, leading to dry, irritated eyes.

MGD usually gets worse with time.  Failure to intervene early can lead to atrophy of your glands with chronic dryness and discomfort over time.

THE SECRET  is to help you tear function naturally, like Nature designed them, and enjoy less redness, less reliance on artificial tears, and greater clarity and comfort.

Tear Restoration Therapy is the BEST WAY to treat symptoms now, and protect your eyes for the future!

The 3 Steps of Tear Restoration Therapy

NON-INVASIVE - EFFECTIVE - LASTING RESULTS

Step 1 – Eyelid Microexfoliation:

Removes debris and biofilm at the openings of the meibomian glands.

Step 2 – Meibomian Gland Rejuvenation:

Heats and softens the oils inside the glands and heals inflammation using a customized combination of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), Radio-Frequency (RF), and Low-Level Light TherapY (LLLT).

Step 3 – Meibomian Gland Expression:

Helps release hardened meibum allowing the oils to flow freely, restoring proper tear function.
