Dr. Michael Chism and I were talking the other day about one of our patients. It was fun seeing the look on Dr. Chism’s face as he told me about his latest keratoconus patient he had fit with scleral contact lenses. “He came in now wearing any glasse and seeing 20/200, and now he’s 20/20! Scleral lenses are so awesome. I love it!”
During a typical week at our busy office in South Jordan, we perform approximately 100 eye exams. Thankfully, most people’s vision can be easily corrected to 20/20 with glasses, daytime contacts, Lasik, or even Ortho-K. Sometimes it get’s so routine for us as optometrists that we forget what a wonderful job this really is.
Yet several times a week we also have moments like Dr. Chism described, where the difference we make is so transformational. It’s hard not to be amazed, and thankful, that we have such cool technology.
Just this month we’ve fit keratoconus patients from Salt Lake City, West Valley, Herriman, and Draper. Almost exclusively now we use scleral contact lenses with amazing results.
